Radha Ashtami – The Divine Appearance of Srimati Radharani
The Glory of Radha Ashtami
Radha Ashtami is one of the most sacred and joyous festivals celebrated by devotees of Lord Krishna around the world. It marks the divine appearance day of Srimati Radharani, the eternal consort of Lord Krishna and the embodiment of the highest love Prem Bhakti.
If Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Krishna, then Radha Ashtami celebrates the birth of love itself for Radha is not just a devotee, she is the personification of pure devotion (Bhakti Swarupini).
Celebrated on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the bright fortnight in the Bhadrapada month (August–September), Radha Ashtami reminds the world of the power, beauty, and selflessness of divine love.
The Birth of Srimati Radharani – The Miracle of Barsana
According to the Padma Purana and Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Srimati Radharani appeared in the small village of Raval near Gokul and was later brought up in Barsana, her eternal abode.
Her divine parents were King Vrishabhanu and Queen Kirtida, great devotees of Lord Narayana.
On that blessed morning of Radha Ashtami, the entire village was filled with a mysterious golden light. Heavenly beings rejoiced, flowers bloomed, and divine music filled the skies.
When baby Radha appeared, she was extraordinarily beautiful her body shone with a golden hue, her eyes closed in serene bliss. Strangely, she did not open her eyes for several months.
It is said that Radharani opened Her eyes only when baby Krishna was brought before Her. The moment She saw Him, Her eyes opened a divine moment symbolizing that Radha exists only for Krishna, and Krishna lives only through Radha.
The Meaning of Radha Ashtami – The Birth of Pure Love
Radha Ashtami is not just a festival; it is the celebration of divine love in its purest form.
Where Krishna represents God’s infinite charm and compassion, Radha represents love itself : the energy that connects every soul to God.
In the scriptures, it is said:
“Krishna cannot be understood without Radha, and Radha cannot be separated from Krishna.”
Radha is the Hladini Shakti, the internal energy of bliss of the Supreme Lord. She is the power through which Krishna experiences love, joy, and compassion.
When we celebrate Radha Ashtami, we are celebrating the awakening of divine love within our own hearts.
Radha Ashtami in Vrindavan and Barsana
No place celebrates Radha Ashtami like Barsana and Vrindavan, the sacred lands of Radha and Krishna.
In Barsana, devotees gather at the Sri Radha Rani Temple (Shri Ladli Ji Mandir) to perform Abhishek (holy bathing) of Radharani’s deity with milk, curd, honey, ghee, and flower petals.
The entire town echoes with chants of
“Radhe Radhe!” and “Jai Shri Radhe Shyam!”In Vrindavan, temples like Banke Bihari Mandir, Prem Mandir, and Radha Raman Temple overflow with devotees singing bhajans, performing kirtans, and decorating the deities with jewels and flowers.
On this day, devotees fast till noon and then break their fast after offering special prayers to Radharani. It’s a day filled with joy, devotion, and surrender.
The Divine Personality of Srimati Radharani
Srimati Radharani is the queen of Vrindavan, the embodiment of compassion, and the greatest devotee of Lord Krishna. Her love is beyond reason and beyond comprehension.
She never asks Krishna for anything not even for His presence. She only desires that He be happy, even if She must endure separation.
Radha’s love is the essence of selflessness.
In the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Krishna Himself says:
“I am conquered not by austerities or wisdom, but by the love of My devotee, and among all devotees, Radharani is supreme.”
She is the teacher of Bhakti the path of loving surrender to God.
Radha and Krishna – The Two Sides of the Divine
In reality, Radha and Krishna are one.
Krishna is the Supreme Consciousness, and Radha is His Supreme Energy of Love. They are like the sun and its rays distinct yet inseparable.
Radha is Krishna’s inner joy personified. She is His heartbeat, His Shakti, His inspiration.
That is why devotees chant “Radhe Krishna” Radha’s name always comes first, because without Radha, Krishna is incomplete.
